Rodolflo Dordoni, who died in August 2023, helped define the aesthetic of contemporary Italian design. “Chapeaux” marks one of the last collaborations between the late Italian architect and designer and cutting-edge lighting manufacturer Foscarini. A refined, elegant lamp capable of changing personality thanks to the hat it wears... The “Chapeaux” lamp stands out for the elegant, balanced proportions of the volumes that make it up: a transparent glass base topped with a lampshade that looks like an item of headgear. The “Chapeaux” lamp was designed to have three different personalities, depending on the material and shape of the lampshade which transforms the character of the lamp, the quality of the light and its decorative impact. The lampshade is available in lacquered steel, blown glass and porcelain. The components of Chapeaux have been reduced to a minimum. They are removable for easy cleaning. The open lampshade in the middle rests on the transparent base, which contains in its upper part a bulb-shaped diffuser which seems to float inside the glass. Specially designed, this diffuser produces intense yet soft light, never dazzling. The small rod above the light globe is a touch dimmer with several positions, to adjust the on-off and light intensity functions. The transparency of the base reinforces the magic of the experience. When the lamp is switched off, the base dematerialises, almost disappearing from view, so you can admire the lampshade, which seems to float in the air. When the light is on, the base takes on the appearance of a “floating” column of light. It projects soft, indirect illumination that highlights the previously indiscernible thickness of the glass form.
